Kho Liang Ie

Kho Liang Ie (1927-1975) was a Dutch industrial designer. He is best known as a creator of the design of Schiphol.

Kho Liang Ie was born in Indonesia from Chinese parents. With the Indonesian independence in 1949 he came to the Netherlands, where he initially started with a medicine study, which study he soon exchanged for a training at the Rietveld Academy. After graduating in 1954, he became an employee of the Goed Wonen foundation, and from 1957 to 1963 he was editor of the eponymous journal. From 1958 until his death he was also active as furniture designer for Artifort, he also designed for Bruynzeel and Mosa.

Kho Liang Ie was involved from an early stage in the design of the new building at Schiphol Airport, which was built between 1963 and 1967 as the successor of the old airport at Schiphol-East. Of the designs of Kho Liang Ie, there is not much to be found at the current Schiphol; some elements of his work can still be found in the arrival halls 1 and 2.

He was one of the pioneers in the design of open-plan offices, he designed the offices of Phonogram in Baarn, among other places. He also designed the interior of the Cultural Center in Amstelveen as well as the Lijnbaan Theater in Rotterdam. Nowadays nothing can be seen after renovations. Much of his furniture has ended up in the collections of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht.
